In 1969, John Wayne brought us the iconic role of “Rooster Cogburn” in “True Grit”. Kim Darby, at age 21 in real life, played the 14-year old girl who hired him to track down her father’s killer.

John Wayne won his one and only Oscar from the role of “Rooster Cogburn”.

Now the Coen Brothers are bringing back “True Grit”. Who can play “Rooster Cogburn”?

The movie is not expected to be a true remake, but rather to follow the original novel by Charles Portis.

And Rooster Cogburn will be portrayed by Jeff Bridges.

Others set to play in the movie include Josh Brolin, Matt Damon and Barry Pepper.

The role of Mattie Ross, the 14 year old girl from the book, will be played by a real 14 year old girl, newcomer Haile Steinfeld.

“True Grit” opens in theaters on Christmas Day, December 25, 2010.
