Sony Pictures “2012″ the latest dooms day epic from the king of disaster himself Roland Emmerich, brought in $65 million in the U.S. and Canada and an unbelievable $160 million worldwide with a weekend total of $225 million.
The movie is based on a so called Maya prophecy that the world will end Dec. 21, 2012. I say so called prophecy because all of the studying I’ve done on the Mayan calendar talks about a rebirth, not the end of the world.
2012 was the second-biggest domestic opening for Roland Emmerich, behind his 2004 disaster film “The Day After Tomorrow” which brought in nearly $70 million. But it was released on a three day holiday weekend. The shows cast includes John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Woody Harrelson, Danny Glover, Thandie Newton and Oliver Platt just to name a few.
