A Rose By Any Other Name…

Will the real Elizabeth Mitchell please stand up?

Well, there is the actress who played in “Lost”, Elizabeth Mitchell, but it’s not her. She was born Elizabeth J. Robertson but took the last name of Mitchell from her stepfather.

The real Elizabeth Mitchell is someone you know by the name of Elizabeth Banks. She couldn’t use her real name because the other Elizabeth beat her to the punch at the Screen Actors Guild. Apparently, they don’t like people having the same names. And it probably wouldn’t be good to have too many people with your same name, in the same business if you are trying to make a name for yourself as an actor.

And there are two Michael Douglas’s. The one you know, married to Catherine Zeta-Jones, son of Kirk but the other Michael Douglas is known as Michael Keaton. Good move, that one. Says he took his name Keaton from Diane. Sounds good. But Diane Keaton isn’t really Diane Keaton. She is actually Diane Hall. But there was already one of those in SAG so she took her mother’s maiden name (shhh, don’t tell the identity thieves!)

And Michael J. Fox’s real middle name is Andrew. Oops, Andrew starts with an A. But of course, Michael A. Fox just doesn’t have the same ring to it as the J does.

But it is not always another actor that makes you change your name. Albert Brooks was actually born Albert Einstein. Obviously, you can see why he wouldn’t want to compete with that.
