Metallica new releases generally are a good time. Throughout their twenty five years most have been a success, only a couple weren’t notable. The fanbase has enjoyed most of their releases, an exception would be the previous release, St. Anger. They seem to have been trying out some new sounds, which was okay except the fans weren’t thrilled. Fans can’t dictate every note a band plays, there has to be some experimenting along the way.

This opened the gate for Death Magnetic, the newest release. For this release, they’ve moved back toward the familiar sound of heavy metal with good song writing. Do they lead the pack in metal? Not necessarily, but they have a huge reputation and following, so with the new release they regain their footing amongst the other metal bands.

The heavy metal scene has changed since the late eighties and early nineties and the band was more of a hard rock band through the nineties. I would not put them in the same category as new metal and even the heavy metal of the newest bands. I would say that there are some good songs on this album that could fit in with any of their back catalog. There are four or five songs that would have fit on any of the past albums and are as good as anything else out there.

Unfortunately, Metallica will probably never reach the height of their first four releases, however, there are a lot of really good groups out there that fall in the same category. Most of the Rolling Stone hits were in the seventies. Their music since then has still been good but it’s just not what it was then.

There are only a couple of bands that can keep putting out hit after hit until the band breaks up, but most bands don’t stick together into their forties and fifties and still stay relevant. You have to admire a band that can still be relevant and popular after so long. Metallica is in a class that very few bands other than the Stones, Aerosmith and a select few others have reached.
