Long before the advent of “The Nightmare Before Christmas”, the original Christmas ghost story touched our hearts. “A Christmas Carol” is a novella by the author Charles Dickens. Originally dubbed “A Christmas Carol in Prose, Being a Ghost Story of Christmas”, it was first published on December 19, 1843.
“A Christmas Carol” has been adapted for film, opera and other media with the lead role of Scrooge having been portrayed by such notable actors as Laurence Olivier and George C. Scott to cartoon characters such as Donald Duck and Mr. Magoo.
Now Disney has a new version of “A Christmas Carol” with Scrooge and all of the ghosts being played by the irrepressible Jim Carrey.
“A Christmas Carol” brought in $31 million at the box office on opening weekend making it the number one movie of the week, however, the receipts were on the low end of projections. It fell short of Carrey’s last holiday movie, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” which brought in $55.1 million on its opening weekend.
However, it is expected that the movie will continue to be a big box office draw as the holiday season progresses as most holiday-themed movies tend to continue to do well throughout the holiday season.
