There have been a few movies that first premiered at the Sundance Film festival and then went on to compete for Hollywood’s highest honor in the Academy Awards.
“In the Bedroom” and “Little Miss Sunshine” both competed for the Best Picture Oscar. This year another Sundance Film festival alum is expected to be in the running for Best Picture.
Next Tuesday, the nominations for the Academy Awards are coming out. The movie that won the top dramatic honor at Sundance last year, “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ By Sapphire” is expected to be nominated for the Best Picture.
Nominations are also expected in the acting category for newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, who plays the lead character and Mo’Nique, who plays her mother.
While a Sundance debut has yet to win the Best Picture Oscar, the global-warming documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” won the Oscar for Best Documentary. Another documentary that debuted at Sundance, “Super Size Me” earned a nomination for best documentary.
Various Sundance debuts have been nominated in the Actor categories.
