Gone, World’s First Megaplex Closing Down

by Kevis on June 4, 2010

Many of us remember the days of the drive-in movies. Now they’re gone. Lost in history.

Then there were the small movie theaters with one or two screens. Some of those are still around.

But nowadays most people see movies at a Megaplex, which is any theater with more than 14 screens. They’re everywhere these days in nearly every city with notable population to support them.

But the first one, the first Megaplex ever, is now closing down.

Located in Dallas, Texas the AMC Grand is a 24 screen theater that was built in 1995. The LA Times has reported that AMC has decided not to renew the lease on the building that housed the 24 screen megaplex.

However, it is not because movies are no longer popular and it is also not because the recession has hit theaters, because neither of those things are true.

Apparently the neighborhood has changed in demographics, becoming more of an area suited for porn purveyors and strip clubs rather than family entertainment and movies.

So perhaps it will now be turned into another upscale strip club? Or not.
