The Deep End of the Sea: Persuasively performed adaptation of Jacquelyn Mitchard’s best seller in reference to the disappearance of a 3 year old at his mommy’s high school reunion, and his possibile return 9 years later. This 2 part tale is admittedly a whopper, yet it’s addressed in believable style that makes one able to acknowledge it. Cast includes Michelle pfeiffer, Treat Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Jonathan Jackson, Ryan Merriman, John Kapelos, and Michael Mcelroy. (109 minutes, 1999)
Lantana: Moving, adult tale of relations obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose matrimony has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he examines the disappearance of a lady whose own matrimony is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Cast includes Anthony LaLaglia, Geoffrey Hurry, Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong, Rachael Blake, Vince Colosimo, Daniela Farinacci, and Peter Phelps. (121 minutes, 2001)
Siddhartha: Choppy rendition of Hermann Hesse novel follows Indian as he leaves hifamily to find more stimulating life. This film is too artsy, although on-location photography by Sven Nykvist is often illuminating. Cast includes Shashi Kapoor, Simi Garewal, Romesh Shama, Pinchoo Kapoor, Zul Vellani, and Amrik Singh. (95 minutes, 1973)
Richard the Third: An elaborate rendition of Shakespeare’s journal of an ambitious 15th-century British baron and his court captivates. Cast includes Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, Claire Bloom, Alec Clunes, Cedric Hardwicke, Stanley Baker, and Pamela Brown. (155 minutes, 1955)
Belles on Their Toes: Here, widowed architect Loy will battle to aid (in addition to raise) her aging brood. 20th Century Fox back lot seen at its best in recollecting early 1900s America. Clifton Webb makes a concise appearance at the finale. Cast includes Myrna Loy, Jeanne Crain, Debra Paget, Jeffrey Hunter, Edward Arnold, Hoagy Carmichael, Barbara Bates, Robert Arthur, Verna Felton, and Martin Milner. (89 minutes, 1952)
I Want Someone to Eat Cheese with: Garlin makes an unassumingly involving impact as an overweight, unlucky, in love joker that imagines he could be the one for the lead role in a suggested redo of Marty. Silverman is a standout as a insane/seductive ice cream parlor waitress. Cast includes Jeff Garlin, Sarah Silverman, Bonnie Seek, Amy Sedaris, David Pasquesi, Gina Gershon, and Elle Fanning. Alfie Darling: Forgettable continuation to Alfie, with Cost a most insufficient substitute for Michael Caine. This time around our idol falls for a fashionable publication editor. Cast includes Alan Cost, Jill Townsend, Joan Collins, Annie Ross, Sheila White, and Rula Lenska. (102 minutes, 1975)
Darby O’Gill and the Little People: Momentous Disney fantasy in reference to an Irish caretaker (Sharpe) who tells so many unbelievable stories that no one believes him while he affirms he’s befriended the Baron of Leprechauns. This film is a real pleasure, with some beaming visual effects. Cast includes Albert Sharpe, Janet Munro, Sean Connery, Jimmy O’Dea, Kieron Moore, and Estelle Winwood. (90 minutes, 1959)
Man of Iron: Somber account of Germi, a railroad architect, whose life takes a catastrophic turn, influencing his entire family. Cast includes Pietro Germi, Luisa Della Noce, Sylva Kascina, and Carla Giuffre. (116 minutes, 1956)
