Oscar night for 2011 brought a few shocks, the first time the ‘F-bomb’ was let loose during Oscar night, thank you Melissa Leo (and isn’t it a hoot that this is the big news about the show all around cyberspace!). Of course, a few winners used their speeches to make political statements, against Wisconsin’s Governor (and the Koch brothers) thinly disguised assault on the Unions and the crimes of the bankers and how they got away with it.

The hosts, Anne Hathaway and James Franco, were young, hip, easy on the eyes and apparently chosen to appeal to a younger demographic. Even so, the preliminary Oscar ratings showed the broadcast to be down 7% from the Oscar’s 2010 show. Reviews after the show indicate that James Franco fell flat as host and there are some or maybe even many that are hoping for Billy Crystal’s return for the 2012 show.

There were few surprises in the winners category. “The King’s Speech” took home for awards, for best picture, best director, best actor and best original screenplay. And favorite Natalie Portman took the honor for Best Actress for her portrayal of a ballerina in Black Swan. Colin Firth was the Best Actor for “The King’s Speech”.

Christian Bale was the Best Supporting Actor for his role in “The Fighter” and Melissa Leo, his counterpart actress in “The Fighter” took home the Best Supporting Actress for the same movie. Apparently in her surprise and shock she let loose with an “F bomb” but it was just a small “conversation malfunction” as the censors were able to bleep it out almost immediately.

The Best Adapted Screenplay was “The Social Network” and as the award was accepted a big “Thank you” went out to Mark Zuckerburg, the founder of Facebook, of whom the movie was based upon. It was noted that nobody would want a film made about them when they were 19 years old, especially one like “The Social Network” which often portrayed him in a very negative light but apparently he has been a good sport about the whole thing (yes, you would think that being a billionaire may be helpful towards forgiving the ploys of mere mortals!) so he was thanked for his good sportsmanship.

For a complete list of all of last night’s winners see Academy Awards.

Is she or isn’t she??

Check out the amazing transformation of one of our favorite actresses of all time for the role of the former Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher.

Uncanny, is it not?

Add to that the fact that Meryl Streep is an amazing actress, having received the most Academy award nominations of any actor with 16 nominations, 2 wins and also the most Golden Globe nominations of any actor, with 25 nominations and 7 wins. And along with all of that a multitude of other awards.

Meryl has always been able to transform herself into the character and there is no doubt she will do the same with the iconic character of Margaret Thatcher.

How it beat out “The Backup Plan” with the other Jennifer, Jennifer Lopez is unknown. “The Backup Plan” as bad as it was, was not even mentioned.

“The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” was also nominated for numerous awards.

The nominations for the 2011 Academy Awards are in and as usual there are some surprises, in who and what was nominated and who and what was snubbed.

Among the snubs were “The Social Network”, however Jesse Eisenberg did get a nom for the best actor. “Inception” is up for the Best Picture but surprisingly nothing else, no other awards. The director of “Inception”, Christopher Nolan has been nominated 3 times for a Directors Guild award, which almost always means an Oscar nom also, however, he has never been nominated for an Oscar.

Ryan Gosling, who was nominated for the Golden Globe for his gritty role in “Blue Valentine” was overlooked for the Oscar nomination but his counterpart in the movie, Michelle Williams, did receive a nod.

And of course, others…..what about your favorite?

The new movie “Blue Valentine” was originally given an NC-17 rating, which is basically equivalent to box office suicide as an NC-17 rating is most often equated as being to close to pornography for box office success.

The film narrowly averted the problem by appealing the decision with the review board and winning a rare case.

The film is now rated R for “strong graphic sexual content, language and a beating”.

“Blue Valentine” will be released in theaters on December 31, just in time to qualify for the Academy Awards.

Hattie McDaniel was the first African American to win any type of Academy Award. She won the award in 1939 for portraying “Mammy” in “Gone With The Wind”.

When she passed away in 1952 her Oscar, which at that time was a plaque as the supporting actors and actresses did not get statuettes until later on, was bequeathed to the Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Sometime in the late 1960’s or early 1970’s the award disappeared. It has been said that it may have disappeared during a time a great racial unrest. Many people were apparently upset because the character of “Mammy” perpetuated negative stereotypes of blacks.

The award has not been seen for decades. It may have been lost or stolen and while some former students claim to have seen the award, it has been missing for over 30 years now.

Being simultaneously considered the best and the worst at your job is an uncommon predicament but that is exactly where A-list movie star, Sandra Bullock finds herself this year.

This past year Sandra starred in back to back box office successes in “The Proposal” and “The Blind Side” but she also starred in the box office flop “All About Steve”.

She received her first nomination for an Oscar playing football mom Leigh Anne Touhy in “The Blind Side” and the very same week she was nominated for a Razzie for playing Mary Horowitz, a crossword puzzle fanatic in the film “All About Steve”.

Just goes to show that a great actor can have great films and not so great films.

Sandra is planning her wardrobe for both events but she seems to be having trouble getting a designer dress for the razzie banquet!

The 10 best picture nominees are:

“Up in the Air”

“Up”

“Avatar”

“The Blind Side”

“District 9”

“An Education”

“The Hurt Locker”

“Inglourious Basterds”

Now is the time to check out these movies if you wish to see them before the awards show!

The most nominated films this year are “Avatar” and “The Hurt Locker” with nine nominations each. Ironically, the directors of each of these films, James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow are ex-spouses (just a little piece of Oscar trivia!).

There have been a few movies that first premiered at the Sundance Film festival and then went on to compete for Hollywood’s highest honor in the Academy Awards.

“In the Bedroom” and “Little Miss Sunshine” both competed for the Best Picture Oscar. This year another Sundance Film festival alum is expected to be in the running for Best Picture.

Next Tuesday, the nominations for the Academy Awards are coming out. The movie that won the top dramatic honor at Sundance last year, “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ By Sapphire” is expected to be nominated for the Best Picture.

Nominations are also expected in the acting category for newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, who plays the lead character and Mo’Nique, who plays her mother.

While a Sundance debut has yet to win the Best Picture Oscar, the global-warming documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” won the Oscar for Best Documentary. Another documentary that debuted at Sundance, “Super Size Me” earned a nomination for best documentary.

Various Sundance debuts have been nominated in the Actor categories.
