“Fast Five” the sequel to the ever-popular “The Fast and the Furious” was huge at the box office over the weekend, setting a record for the franchise and becoming the third-highest grossing opening weekend outside of the summer and holiday seasons and becoming distributor Universal Pictures biggest-grossing opening weekend ever, even surpassing “The Lost World: Jurassic Park, the previous record-holder for Universal, which brought in $72.1 million on its opening weekend.

“Fast Five” brought in an astounding $86,198,765.00 million while showing at 3644 locations over the weekend bringing in a higher total than anything that we’ve seen in the recent past.

“Alice in Wonderland” from 2010 holds the current record for movies outside of summer and holiday seasons, with $116.1 million and “The Passion of the Christ” is in the number 2 spot with $83.8 million.

The number 2 movie “Rio” didn’t even make a dent towards those totals bringing in just $14,787,836.00 and looking much more like the typical fare that we have been accustomed to this year. It was down 43.8% from last week.

“Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family was down 60.7 % from last week’s highs bringing in $9,860,929.00

The disappointing finisher, “Water For Elephants” (meaning that it has disappointed at the box office, even though it may be an amazing movie….) brought up the fourth position with $9,342,413.00

And the new release “Prom” came in at fifth place with $4,712,638.00

The number one movie was a repeat of last week’s number one. “Rio” was down 31.7% from last week’s high but it still managed to hold onto the number one spot bringing in $26,800,000.00

In the number 2 spot was the new movie from Tyler Perry, “Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Big Happy Family” which just barely lost the top billing for the week as it brought in almost as much as “Rio” with totals of $25,750,000.00

“Hop”, the movie that was all about the Easter bunny continued its run with a showing at the fourth spot bringing in $12,461,000.00

And in the fifth spot for the Easter weekend was “Scream 4”, which brought in a total of $7,154,000.00

And the one you’ve all been waiting for, “Scream 4” hits theaters today. Bringing back the most of the original cast, Neve Campbell, David Arquette, and Courteney Cox along with newcomers Emma Roberts and Mary McDonnell. Ghostface reappears when Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, returns to her hometown of Woodsboro for the last stop of her self-help book tour. Horror. Rated R.

And from the same people who brought us “Ice Age” is “Rio”, a comedy adventure about taking a walk on the wild side. Blu is a domesticated Macaw who never learned how to fly. He lives with his owner Linda and they believe that he is the last of his kind, however, when they learn of another like him they take a trip to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to find his female counterpart. Adventure and danger ensues and it turns out that Blu will have to find the courage to learn how to fly. Animated Adventure. Rated G.

“The Conspirator”, reviewed here earlier this week. From director Robert Redford, starring Robin Wright as Mary Surratt, a 42 year old female owner of a boardinghouse who was the only woman charged with conspiracy in the murder of President Abraham Lincoln by John Wilkes Booth. Mary must rely on her newly-minted and reluctant lawyer to defend her in a military tribunal. Drama. Rated PG-13.

“The Princess of Montpensier” set in France in 1562. Classic love story, girl from aristocratic societ falls in love with a man below her even while her hand is promised to the Prince of Montpensier. Love story. Not yet rated.

“The Imperialists Are Still Alive” a successful visual artist works in post 9-11 Manhatten and watches the situation in the Middle East on TV. She learns that a childhood friend is the purported victim of a CIA abduction. Conspiracy theories abound. Not yet rated.

“Dumbstruck” the story of five professional ventriloquists of all different levels of abilities, talents and fame. Rated PG.

“Footprints” chronicles a young woman’s journey of discovery in one day from sunrise to sunset. Not yet rated.

The law can be interesting and of course, there are some great stories that come around about lawyers.

IMDb recently put together a list of the 25 best movies about lawyers. Who knows if they are in any specific order as “The Lincoln Lawyer”, which was a really good book by the way, was in first place and one of those classic movies that everyone loves, the movie and the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird” came in at number 6.

It’s interesting that many of the movies on the list started out as great novels. Number 3 on the list “Primal Fear” was based upon the novel by the same name by William Diehl. Richard Gere plays the attorney Martin Vail and Edward Norton plays Aaron Stampler. The movie was great. The book was awesome. If you love books you need to check this one out for sure and if you love movies, again you must check this one out for sure.

Also, John Grisham has written many a legal thriller and three of the movies on the list were adapted from his novels. “A Time to Kill”, with Matthew McConaughey in his first starring role and based upon the novel of the same name, which just happened to be John Grisham’s first published novel (and in my opinion his best ever!). “The Firm” with Tom Cruise, also a great Grisham book. And finally “The Rainmaker” with Matt Damon.

Jodi Picoult, another great author also has a novel made into a movie that made the list. “My Sister’s Keeper” will rip your heart out. Both the book and the movie were great, however, the ending of the book was much more compelling and much more unexpected than how they ended up ending the movie. In fact, that was probably the only disappointment in the film.

“Presumed Innocent” with Harrison Ford and Brian Dennehy was adapted from Scott Turow’s first novel.

A couple of the movies on the list are based upon true stories about lawyers who took up the cause of huge corporations dumping toxic waste. You probably remember “Erin Brockovich” with Julia Roberts and “A Civil Action” with John Travolta.

Another true story is “Conviction” with Hillary Swank. This movie follows the life of “Betty Anne Waters” a single mother who puts herself through law school to defend her brother from unjust charges.

And of course, there are a bunch of others that all look like great movies, especially if you’re into that kind of thriller. The law is often interesting, very much intriguing and of course, compelling with its stories.

Check out the list here 25 great movies about lawyers.

Enjoy!

Coming to theaters this Friday, April 15 is a new movie that tells a little known true story about the Civil War and the Assassination of President Lincoln.

“The Conspirator” stars Robin Wright, whom I fondly remember as “Jenny” from “Forrest Gump”, as Mary Surratt, a female owner of a Washington boardinghouse who was accused of being a co-conspirator in John Wilkes Booth’s plot to assassinate President Lincoln.

“The Conspirator” is directed by veteran actor and director, Robert Redford.

What makes the movie and the story compelling is the story within the story. All of us in the United States and especially those from the Southern Confederacy states have learned about and we think we know many of the stories of the Civil War and the emancipation of the slaves, however, there are stories that have yet to be told.

Mary Surratt, played by Robin Wright, is accused of a terrible crime and Frederick Aiken, played by James McAvoy, is her reluctant lawyer. Mary was the lone woman charged along with seven men. She owned the boarding house where John Wilkes Booth and others met to plan the attacks on the President. Her young lawyer, a Union war hero who just recently became a lawyer, agrees to defend Mary against the military tribunal. As the trial unfolds, it becomes apparent that Mary may just be innocent and she may be being used as a bait and hostage to capture one of the true conspirators, who is her own son.

In recent interviews, Redford has mentioned the contemporary relevance of the military tribunal with Guantanamo and other tribunals in the news today. Also, the similarities that whenever there is chaos there is ambiguity and when there is ambiguity there is fear. And fear gets manipulated.

That does sound similar to many things that are happening today in the political landscape.

Liam Neeson shot scenes for a short cameo appearance in the upcoming sequel to the hugely popular “The Hangover” movie, appropriately titled “The Hangover Part II”.

Neeson had spent time filming some scenes for the movie in a role as a tattoo artist in the Bangkok based sequel but his short appearance was lost in the editing process. The film’s director Todd Phillips was compelled to do reshoots and by that time Liam Neeson was no longer available for the shooting of the film due to scheduling conflicts.

So the small part was taken up by a handsome gray haired man, who no one will likely recognize, Nick Cassavetes, the director of “The Notebook”.

In an interesting side note, the role of the tattoo artist and cameo appearance has now been cast three times as originally it was supposed to go to veteran actor, Mel Gibson.

However, Mel Gibson has created a great deal of controversy in the past few years and apparently there was an uproar on the set and among the other actors about his possible involvement in the film and therefore Mel Gibson was released and Liam Neeson was chosen for the part.

Todd Phillips, the director for “The Hangover Part II” never divulged who among the cast complained r who wanted Mel Gibson to be released but in a comedy podcast from funnyman Zach Galifianakis indicated that he was having a “deep protest right now with a movie I’m working on, up in arms about something” So rumor has it that he may have been the one with the issue, or maybe even more members of the cast had an issue.

But not matter. Now Gibson is out. Neeson is out. And Nick Cassavetes is in.

“The Hangover Part II” brings back the cast from the first movie, Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Justin Bartha. It is scheduled for release on May 16, 2011.

And of course, “The Hangover” was a great success but one must wonder how a sequel will work out. After all everyone loved the first “Speed” movie too.
