Now playing from January 21, 2010 to January 31, the 2010 Sundance Film Festival.
Sundance is the largest independent cinema festival is the United States. It is held annually in January in Park City, Utah with events also held in Salt Lake City, Ogden as well as the Sundance Resort.
Sundance got its start back in 1978 as the Utah/US film festival as a means to attract more filmmakers to Utah. Over the years many changes took place and in 1981 it changed from September to January when Hollywood Director Sydney Pollack suggested that a winter venue in a ski resort town would attract more of Hollywood’s elite.
The name was change in 1985 after Robert Redford’s character in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”.
Many prominent independent filmmakers, including Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Paul Thomas Anderson, Steven Soderbergh, James Wan, Edward Burns and Jim Jarmusch got their first big break at Sundance.
Sundance also brought wider attention to such notable films as Saw, The Blair Witch Project, Little Miss Sunshine, Napoleon Dynamite and Precious.
