One of the current trends in Hollywood is a plethora of Wizard of Oz remakes. Right now there are at least 4 and maybe more potential remakes of the classic tale by Frank Baum.
Drew Barrymore is set to direct and possibly star in a Wizard remake entitled “Surrender Dorothy”. It follows the story of a granddaughter, with maybe a few “greats” thrown in, as in “great-granddaughter”, who discovers for herself the magic in the red slippers.
And what about Oz before Oz? In a Wizard of Oz prequel, called “Oz The Great And Powerful”, Robert Downey is cast in the title role of the Wizard. Sam Mendes is potentially set to direct the film.
And last Warner Bros. is considering two distinct Wizard projects, a family friendly version and another that is not.
All of these films are in preliminary stages so we will just have to wait to see what happens.
